Madhura
Silk dyes on raw silk saree
Madhura (beauty).
A king goes into the jungle to hunt. He falls in love with a beautiful woman, Shakuntala. This poem written in the 5th Century in the play Shakuntalam is all about the idea of beauty. Is something beautiful when flawed?
The saree is a translation of that poem. A lotus grows in the muck but its untouched by it. The moon is full of craters but its brilliance isn’t diminished by it. This woman in front of me is only dressed in bark but is more beautiful than anyone I have seen. Inherently beautiful things in nature need no adornment. The imperfections only enhance natural beauty.
